Legacy Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Utah

2011 Transportation Options

We are encouraging a new flight plan. In the past, we encouraged people to book round trips into Las Vegas because it was the closest international airport to Cedar City where we end the ride. However, round trip into Las Vegas adds about 2 hours on each end of the shuttle ride to and from that airport, which used to be better than a round trip out of Salt Lake City (5 hours away). However, in February 2011 they opened a new international airport in St. George which is a game changer for us, and should make it much easier for you to get here and for us to help you shuttle to and from the airport.

I recommend you check out the following flight plans in this order:

  1. Fly into Grand Junction, Colorado one-way on August 31st, and fly out of St. George, Utah at the end of the ride on September 10th or 11th. I have heard you can get inexpensive one way flights into Grand Junction, CO, and for just a little more, fly out of St. George at 6:19 pm which allows time to connect with flights in Salt Lake City back to most major airports in the east and all of them in the west that same night. For the extra shuttle fee, we will arrange for a shuttle ride to pick you up in Grand Junction, Colorado, which is only 2 hours from Moab where we begin all options of the LAGBRAU. This shuttle fee includes either a shuttle to the St. George airport at the end at the end of the LAGBRAU (only an hour away), or a shuttle back to Green River and Moab for those who drove from the east and left cars there or flew into Grand Junction and would like to fly back out of Grand Junction.

  2. Second option would be round trips to and from either St. George, or Grand Junction. Both of these options will require a shuttle ride across the state, either before the ride (if you fly into St. George) or after the ride (if you fly into Grand Junction). We have arranged for a tour company out of southern Utah to handle both shuttle trips. Of the two, I recommend flying into the St. George Airport. This option will take about 5.5 hours of shuttle time across Utah to Moab prior to the ride and about an hour from the end of the LAGBRAU from Cedar City back to St. George, Utah. This option also includes an easy but beautiful hike in Kolob Canyon which is in a part of Zion National Park that most who visit the park never get to see.

  3. Option 3 would be to get a round trip in and out of Las Vegas. There is an additional $29 dollar shuttle fee each way on the St. George shuttle with departing shuttles each way, 9 times daily, to and from Las Vegas. If enough people choose this option, our shuttle company may arrange a shuttle for a little less than that. We are trying to cut down on the amount of time shuttling so we are not planning to provide our own shuttle out of Las Vegas.

BICYCLE TRANSPORTATION: Rather than bring your bike on the plane, we recommend you arrange to ship it. High Country Shipping does a great job. They will mail you the shipping tag and tell you when to ship your bike to Jacque at Moab Cyclery. Jacque will assemble it for $25 so that it is ready when you arrive. You can also choose to add $1,000 insurance coverage. Then the folks at High Country Shipping send the return shipping labels to Brian at Cedar Cycle who will disassemble your bike in Cedar City for $25 and ship it back to you. This usually cost less than bringing it on the plane without 100% surety that it will arrive with you, which has happened.
